BEC Memorials Discusses Veterans’ Memorial Vandalism in Oneida County

Recent acts of vandalism and theft involving veterans’ memorials across Oneida County have raised concerns for local families and communities. These memorials are more than stone and metal. They honor the lives, service, and sacrifices of veterans and preserve their stories for future generations.

Following the incidents, Eyewitness News reporter Louie Genovese spoke with BEC Memorials to provide a local memorial professional’s perspective on how thefts like these can occur and what they may mean for the families and communities affected.

Why Veterans’ Memorials Can Be Targeted

Many veterans’ memorials and cemetery monuments include bronze plaques, markers, emblems, vases, and other metal components. Unfortunately, these materials can sometimes become targets for theft because of their potential scrap value.

Removing these pieces can cause damage beyond the item that was stolen. Depending on how a plaque, marker, or accessory was installed, its removal may damage the surrounding stone or mounting area and create additional restoration work.

For families, however, the greatest loss often goes far beyond the cost of replacing a physical component. Memorials represent loved ones and preserve their legacy. When a memorial is intentionally damaged or a meaningful piece is stolen, it can be especially upsetting for the families who entrusted that memorial to honor someone for generations.

Restoring a Damaged Memorial

When a monument or memorial has been vandalized, the appropriate repair depends on the extent and type of damage. Some situations may involve replacing missing bronze components, while others can require stone repair, resetting, cleaning, or more extensive restoration.

Each memorial should be evaluated individually to determine what can be repaired, what may need to be replaced, and how closely the original appearance can be restored.
